What to demonstrate: What ownership genuinely means to you. This is often the closing question — pick something that reveals your values and the depth of pride you take in your work and its impact on people or systems.

Show: Authentic pride in something you owned deeply — ideally something that helped people, built lasting capability, or reflected your standards — told with genuine ownership, not humble-bragging.

Trap: A generic ‘a project I shipped,’ or false modesty. The best answers reveal what you truly care about owning — often people, reliability, or durable systems — with real conviction.

Worked example: "S: Over a few years I built and owned my team’s platform and reliability practices essentially from the ground up. T: I treated it as genuinely mine to steward. A: I owned not just the systems but the culture around them — the reliability standards, the blameless postmortem practice, the on-call health, the documentation, mentoring others into ownership too. I cared about it the way you care about something you’re personally responsible for. R: It outlived my direct involvement — the practices and the people I developed kept it strong after I moved on. I feel the deepest ownership over it because it wasn’t just code I wrote; it was a durable capability and a set of people I helped grow. That’s the kind of ownership that actually matters to me — building something that lasts and lifts others, not just shipping something with my name on it."
